Strokes used in Esalen include long and gliding movements generally applied with an oil or high viscous cream to reduce kneading, vibration, tapping, and friction. Massage therapists also incorporate stretching to elongate the musculature and increase the joint range.
Effleurage is gentle circular and long sweeping motions to move inflammation out of the muscles increases venous circulation and allows oxygen, vitamins, and nutrients to nourish the body.
Petrissage is massage movements with applied pressure which are deep. These techniques relieve specific knots and problem areas, or deeper muscle tension.
A hot stone massage is a type of massage therapy. It uses the intensity of the heated stones to help you relax and ease tense muscles and irritated soft tissues throughout your body. During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of your body and gliding strokes are used to address problem areas.
